Introducing Helen Chan, couples therapist, to our team!

Working from an evidence-based framework using Emotionally Focused Therapy, Helen draws upon elements of other modalities including mindfulness interventions, CBT, and SFT. Helen’s approach is relational, culturally sensitive, and client-centred. Her warm, genuine, and compassionate nature allows individuals with whom she works with to feel safe, heard, and respected.

Helen’s therapeutic areas of interest stem from both personal and professional experiences. Having to struggle through many life transitions including relational, birth, and parenthood, she feels passionate in supporting new parents, couples, and individuals who are experiencing difficulties with pregnancy and postpartum. In her rehabilitation work, she recognized the importance of providing mental health support to those with chronic pain due to the enormous impact that it has on her clients’ overall emotional well-being. Helen would feel privileged in supporting your unique experiences whether you are struggling with chronic pain, relational concerns, transitioning through pregnancy and birth, or in learning to adapt as new parents.

Helen strongly believes that our health and well-being depends on our connections with ourselves, our loved ones, and others. Working collaboratively with you and/or your partner, she will help you to explore, understand, and enhance your awareness of relationship patterns. Through your work with Helen, you will become empowered to find ways to form loving, meaningful relationships, build strength, and create healthy and balanced living.

Outside of Helen’s professional life, she enjoys spending time in the outdoors with her husband and two teenaged children, connecting with family and friends, and practicing yoga. Because of Helen’s experience as an immigrant and her diverse family background in terms of religious faith, sexual orientation, and interracial marriage, she endeavours to become a culturally competent therapist.

Helen would feel humbled and honoured to walk alongside you in your journey towards healing. She invites you to connect with her to start this journey together!

Helen completed her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University and holds a York/Seneca Rehabilitation Services Program Certificate and a Certificate for Refugee and Migration Studies from York University. She has also received additional training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, and Maternal Mental Health. Helen has extensive experience working with people with disabilities including physical and mental health conditions and has held various rehabilitation-related positions.
