Couples Therapy Centre now Proudly offers Psychotherapy for Children and Teens!

Updated: Sep 13, 2022

Many of the couples we work with ask for support for their child/teen who may be facing a range of mental health challenges. We are committed to the health and well being of couples as well as their family members, and are proud to say that we now offer services for children and adolescents.

Couples Therapy Centre welcomes Antonietta (Toni) Mongillo Desideri, Registered Psychotherapist and Music Therapist to our team.

Toni offers various psychotherapy techniques (including music and play) to support children and adolescents who experience difficulties related to their emotions and behaviours.

Psychotherapy can help children/teens with concerns such as :

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Stress

  • Bullying

  • Divorce

  • Blended family issues

  • Grieving loss of pet or loved one

  • Trauma

  • Abuse

  • Change and Transitions (new home, new school, new step parent, etc)

  • Family substance abuse or addiction

With Toni's expertise, your child will receive emotional support, and gain a better understanding of his/her/their own feelings and problems. Toni uses a very client-focused, holistic approach. Your child/teen’s comfort and security in the relationship and intervention come first. She addresses the relationship in a very playful, non-threatening way and facilitates activities that may focus on psycho-education and expression. She believes in the importance of guiding children into emotional awareness and expression, which is the foundation of a healthy and adaptable adulthood.

Toni has a wealth of experience, including early intervention, developmental disabilities, trauma (working abroad in Bosnia, Herzegovina), mental health/emotions awareness/management, bereavement, geriatrics/dementia, VAW/Women and Children’s Shelters, and in palliative care. For the last seven years, she has worked with children in a paediatric hospital in haematology/oncology, trauma, burns, palliative care and general surgery.

As a registered psychotherapist, she has had a wonderful career being able to use music and the creative arts in her therapeutic work with children. She found her heart in paediatric work, and has seen first hand how music and play can be so effective. Music is a natural connector and communicator for children and teens as it allows expression of feelings and accessing of thoughts and beliefs in a meaningful way.

As a parent herself, Toni experiences the struggle of everyday life and understands that deciding to seek therapy for your child or teenager is not an easy decision. It is important that you find a therapist that is a good fit for your child, and we encourage you to book your free consultation with Toni here. (Toni is available Wednesdays and Thursdays 2-6pm, and Saturday mornings).

With Toni's guidance, you can help your child/teen learn the tools, techniques, and strategies that can better prepare them for any challenges he/she faces – now and in the future.
